Accessiblity
There is no denying that the restoration of a 1929 workers cottage presents unique challenges regarding accessibility. It is however important to understand that accessibility goes beyond physical modifications as we may have thought in times past.
As is life, we had to accept what we couldn’t change but embrace and celebrate what we could change, and so we designed The Nesting Post to be mindful of sensory needs, particularly for guests with neurodivergence including cognitive disabilities, autism and anxiety or those simply seeking a peaceful and calming environment. Our sensory-aware design reduces overload and creates a soothing atmosphere, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.
Simple, Clutter-Free Design: Our interior is designed with simplicity in mind, offering visual calm through neutral colours and a soothing palette.
Natural Textures: Soft, natural fibre textiles are used throughout the cottage, adding to the sense of tranquillity.
Lighting: We maximize natural light with large windows and lightweight linen curtains, while providing a range of lighting options—lamps, traditional overhead lighting, and LED flameless candles. We do not use fluorescent or compact fluorescent lighting, and all windows are fitted with block-out blinds for restful sleep.
Noise Management: Acoustic insulation in bathrooms, soft-close cabinetry, and quiet appliances help maintain a peaceful environment. Every room can also be closed off to provide additional privacy or reduce noise. The cottage is situated back from the front property boundary, and located on quiet country bitumen road.
Quiet Retreat Spaces: Our cosy daybed nook offers a safe, quiet space for moments of retreat, ideal for guests managing sensory overload or simply needing a break from stimulation. The back alfresco area also provides a private quiet area in nature, while the solitary sandstone meditation block has been strategically placed under shady trees to take advantage of the sweeping views.
Sensory-Friendly Library: Our library includes beautifully illustrated books and periodicals with recycled paper, natural matte finishes, and muted printing for a gentle sensory experience.
Art and Music: We provide a variety of art materials and a portable Bluetooth speaker. The cottage is free from the distraction and blue light of television, radio, or streaming devices.
Scent: Our toiletries and cleaning products are naturally derived and lightly scented. Our handmade, bespoke house scent was designed by Rewild Co Perfumery and is created by Amanda Stevens in small batches using time honoured perfumery practices and ingredients. For those who enjoy aromatherapy, an essential oil diffuser is available.
